Descriere

The first recital of Emil Gilels at the famous Carnegie Hall took place in 1955, during his tour through the United States. The reviewer of „The New York Times” Horward Taubman wrote in his article on October 5, 1955: „Playing in New York for the first time last night, Gilels proved that he is a virtuoso in the grand line… His fingers nave boundless agility and control . . . The piano bends to his will …”

Some days later, critic Louis Biancolli was to wrote: „His technique is wizardry of the most brilliant sort, disciplined and sure, and never there for its own sake … But just as there was more than manual magic to last week’s Tchaikovsky Piano Concerte No. 1, so there was more — much more — to last night’s interpretations than an exhibition of prodigious skill. The poetry and feeling were again there as a testament of higher faith”.

In season of 1968—1969 Emil Gilels arrive to USA for the seventh time. Informing about great success of musician’s performances American press marked that Gilels was given a reception that can only be classed with those bestowed upon Artur Rubinstein and Vladimir Horowitz.

On February 2, 1969, Gilels gave at Carnegie Hali an unforgettable recital which American music reviewers called historic. „Emil Gilels’ sold-out
recital alternated savage brilliance with tenderness – – power with lyric simplicity” (The New York Times).

On two discs of the present album are recorded the works by Bach, Beethoven, Medtner, Prokofiev, Ravel an Chopin, which Gilels performed during that historic recital at the Carnegie Hall.
